Floods- The Year Britain Went Under
1 x 1hr - for Channel 4
In 2007, Britain experienced some of the worst floods in
history. The floods caused 3 billion pounds worth of damage, left
49,000 homeless and took the lives of 14 people. But 2007 was also
an extraordinary of flooding around the globe.
The Year That Britain Flooded uses eyewitness testimony, home
video footage and scientific analysis to unravel the causes behind
one of Britain's worst natural disasters. Was this an extraordinary
dose of meteorological misfortune or was climate change to
blame?
The film includes the tragic story of Mike Barnett who lost his
life while trying to clear an elderly neighbour's drain and goes on
to recount the confusion that reigned during the emergency
evacuation of the villages at the foot of the ill-fated Ulley
Dam.
In the final part, the November tidal surge takes centre stage
as towns and villages along the East Coast prepared themselves for
an inundation on a similar scale to the 1953 event that killed
nearly 300 people. Are regular emergency flood warnings a sign of
things to come?
